Stanton J. Peale

Professor Emeritus, 1937–2015

Stanton J. Peale (1937–2015) studied the dynamics and interiors of planets and moons. After a PhD from Cornell and a faculty post at UCLA, he joined the UCSB Physics Department in 1968 as its first appointment in astrophysics. He became professor emeritus in 1994 and remained active in research until his death.

In 1979 Peale, Cassen and Reynolds predicted that tidal heating would melt much of Io and produce widespread volcanism. Voyager 1 confirmed the prediction that year. In 1976 he proposed a way to find the size and state of Mercury’s core from its spin and gravity field. Decades later he and colleagues applied it, with radar and MESSENGER data, to show that the core is liquid.

He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2009. The department’s Peale Lecture honors his work.
